Digital Rights Management
Media-iBox DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT
DRM is defined as a system for protecting the copyrights of data circulated via the Internet or other digital media by enabling secure distribution and/or disabling illegal distribution of the data. DRM works upon the concept of ‘rights’ associated with the digital content.
LabOne’s Media-iBox DRM is deployed in most systems delivered to our customers, effectively defining, associating, trading, and monitoring rights of digital files. Media-iBox DRM protects intellectual property by encrypting the data and marking the content with a digital watermark. This prevents your content from being distributed freely and allows only users/consumers that you authorize to have access. It is formed by 3 distinct sub-systems:
- Encryption of content
- Business rules (business model)
- Delivery of license
DRM starts with the encryption of the content. Once the content is encrypted, a key is required to unlock the content. The content is then seamlessly delivered either through streaming or HTTP download, generally negotiated via a client online application within a media player. Consumers/users who want to play the content, typically, will needs to visit an e-commerce website and transact with the business-rules process at the website, most of the time involving one of registration, login, and/or payment. A license is then issued and the content can be played for as many times or as long as the business rules set by you dictate.
The license generated by Media-iBox DRM will likely contain the key for decrypting the stream and/or content file, and the associated set of business rules or rights. These rules can be but are not limited to play only, play and record, single play, play for a set number of days, can(not) be copied to other media a set number of times – and all associated with the respective licensee or consumer/end-user.
The license has the property that it is exclusively valid for a given device (usually a PC), and a limited number of copies on diverse medium such as CDs and DVDs. Should your end-user/consumer try playing the protected content, the player first checks the license record on the machine. If a license is not found, the player will seek it at online e-commerce site (URL) which is embedded in the packaged content. Playback will follow if and when license is obtained and decryption starts, be it on-demand or live streaming content.
In summary, Media-iBox DRM will:
- Discover that digital media content is protected
- Understand the business rules associated with the content and end-user/consumer
- Provide access if everything checks out.
Media-iBox DRM functionality includes by it is not limited to:
- Management of content and its metadata
- Terms and conditions associated with the use of digital media
- License agreement for consumers to download digital media
- Online applications for managing ingestion and encryption.
- Interfaces with most commerce billing systems
- Necessary precautions against unauthorized access and/or use of content.
- Customizable to integrate or to be built onto any monetization model for digital media.
- Fully compliant with Microsoft’s Windows Media DRM Software Development Kit.
- Optionally compliant (in addition to Windows) with Real Networks® DRM based upon the Helix DRM platform
While LabOne will deliver DRM in any of the most popular DRM platforms, current versions of Media-iBox DRM use Microsoft Windows Media® DRM. Based upon Windows Media Rights Manager, Microsoft provides a DRM platform to securely deliver content over the Internet in a protected, encrypted file format. Windows Media files can be played on a computer, portable device, or network device using Windows Media Player.

DRM and your IT Infrastructure
Media-iBox DRM, as part of one of the Media-iBox systems, will allow you to build and continuously improve digital media services to your audiences. When paired with Media-iBox INFRA, DRM enables companies to cost-effectively achieve a level of scale, quality, security, and delivery efficiency without taking their eyes off their core business, while retaining total creative and business control of their unique solutions.
Media-iBox systems will easy integrate into existing IT infrastructure, and add a wide range of cryptographic and anti-piracy measures to protect digital media related services. Media-iBox Online Business Rules Manager provides you with the technology that packages files and issues with a full-strength encryption algorithm. Developed by Microsoft, this algorithm is based on ciphers that have withstood the scrutiny of the cryptographic community, including most record labels and movie studios. No decryption key is contained in the Windows Media format file container itself. Decrypting an isolated Windows Media file would require strong cryptographic algorithms. LabOne’s Professional Services team is the only Microsoft accredited DRM implementation partner from Latin America. If LabOne locked it, it will stay locked until you tell us to open it.
